Best for
Studios and engineers recording stereo sources — orchestral, chamber, choir, piano, drum overheads, room ambience — who want a factory-matched pair of U47-style tube microphones. The cardioid + figure-8 pattern set makes it directly usable for Blumlein and mid-side (M/S) arrays as well as X/Y and spaced-pair techniques.
Who should skip
Anyone who needs an omnidirectional pattern for stereo work — the U48 offers cardioid and figure-8 only, whereas Telefunken's U47 pairs cardioid with omni. Also skip if you need phantom-powered, grab-and-go mics: each U48 requires the dedicated external power supply and special 10 m tube cable, and each mic weighs 620 g at 240 mm long. Buyers who only ever record mono sources are paying for matching they won't use.
Watchouts
The Economik listing was marked currently unavailable at research time — confirm stock/lead time before purchase. Per-microphone specifications above are taken from the manufacturer's single-U48 product page (the stereo set applies them per mic). One third-party aggregator summary circulated a 400 Ω output impedance figure, but the manufacturer and both retailers checked state 200 Ω — the manufacturer value is used here. Figure-8 is the only alternative pattern; there is no omni or pattern-sweep like on multi-pattern remote-control tube mics.
