Best for
Location and classical recording engineers capturing 5.0/5.1 surround — orchestral, choral, and concert-hall work — who want a complete, manufacturer-matched OCT rig. The OCT geometry (center cardioid plus supercardioid L/R 8 cm behind and 40-90 cm apart) is specifically designed for strong separation between the front L/C and C/R sectors and a clean, discrete center channel, and the compact CCM mics with the included MAB 1000 bars and CB-MAB bracket mount as a single flyable array.
Who should skip
Anyone recording only in stereo (the smaller OCT Set, No. 129003, covers L/C/R front-only with 3 mics), and anyone targeting immersive 3D/height formats — SCHOEPS makes the OCT-3D Set (No. 129005) with four additional upward-facing supercardioids for that. Also not for engineers who need standard XLR mics without adapters: these are Lemo-connector CCM compacts, converted to XLR-3M via the included K 5 LU cables.
Watchouts
Naming: SCHOEPS itself calls No. 129004 the 'OCT Surround Set'; 'OCT Five Channel Surround Set' is the retailer's name for the same part number. Spec conflicts: Long & McQuade lists CCM 4 max SPL as 132 dB, while the manufacturer's current CCM 4 page states 136 dB SPL at P48 (128 dB at P12) — prefer the manufacturer figure. Frequency-range and sensitivity figures published by SCHOEPS for the MK 4/MK 41 capsules (40 Hz-26 kHz) are measured with CMC 6 amplifiers, not the CCM compacts; the 40 Hz-20 kHz / 13 mV/Pa CCM 4 figures here come from a retailer listing. The Economik listing showed the set as currently unavailable at time of research.
