Best for
Mastering and mixing engineers, and critical-listening buyers, who want a complete integrated playback chain: the LS1a builds DSP crossover, calibration, D/A conversion, and NCore Class D amplification into the speaker, accepts three AES/EBU digital sources plus a stereo analog input directly, and its wide-baffle form factor is unidirectional down to 250 Hz, which Grimm states allows positioning close to a wall without wall-reflection interference. The filtered subwoofer output and DSP make later expansion to a phase-coherent three-way system with LS1s or SB1 subwoofers straightforward.
Who should skip
Anyone who wants a conventional passive monitor for an existing amplifier chain, needs high playback levels (published LS1-series max SPL is about 105 dB at 1 m), needs full 20 Hz extension without buying subwoofers (the two-way configuration is specified down to about 40 Hz), or needs a compact nearfield that sits on a desk or meter bridge in standard form — the LS1a is a floor-standing system 1150 mm or 1450 mm tall (a Nano legs version is offered as an option). Latency of 7.3 ms (two-way) to 40 ms (three-way) may also matter for tracking musicians on headphone-free monitoring.
Watchouts
Three things to verify with the dealer. (1) Pair vs. single: the Economik page does not state whether CAD 23,990 covers a pair or a single speaker; US retailers (FrontEndAudio at USD 17,250, B&H) list the LS1a as a pair, and the CAD price is consistent with a pair, but confirm before ordering. (2) Amplifier power conflicts across sources: Grimm's 2025 LS1 manual specifies 250 W (woofer) / 100 W (tweeter) per side, while FrontEndAudio's LS1a page lists 2 x 120 W per side and older Grimm text referenced 120 W Ncore amps — the manufacturer figure may reflect the current LS1v2 platform rather than the LS1a specifically. (3) Numeric specs (frequency response, SPL, SNR, dimensions) are published by Grimm at LS1-series level, not in an LS1a-specific datasheet; the 20 Hz lower limit in the series spec corresponds to the subwoofer-equipped three-way system, with the two-way specified to roughly 40 Hz. Driver sizes (8" woofer, 1" tweeter) come from a retailer, not from Grimm's own documents.
